Golden Solitude: An initiation into summer light

Golden-Solitude

“Summer isn’t about consumption anymore.”

It can be about surrendering to the glowing sunlight. Letting the long days recalibrate you slowly and purposefully giving yourself time to yourself. Pausing.

In ancient cultures, summer was treated as a threshold. Temples were built in ancient Egypt and Celtic cultures to align with the first rays of summer’s light. Stone corridors were measured precisely so that at solstice dawn, sunlight would enter sacred chambers and illuminate the inner sanctum. It was not decoration — it was revelation. Light itself was considered initiation.

Mystics often embarked on vision quests alone and spent nights outside to receive visions and guidance from the ancestors. They fasted beneath relentless skies, allowing the sun to strip away distraction. They listened in silence until insight arrived like heat rising from the earth. They balanced their time alone with their time with their tribe in celebration. Solitude strengthened them; community expressed them.

They understood something subtle and powerful:

when the light is strongest, the soul requires clarity.

The energy of summer has always been seen as when we turn up the volume on everything. Let our hair down and our voices out, letting our skin show and our bodies moving more. Everyone is awake and social invitations flow

like waves one after another. It seems everyone

is everywhere having fun.

But for so many people, summer carries a strange ache. The things that you miss rise to

the surface.

In the brightness, contrast becomes sharper. What felt muted in winter is illuminated now. The long days stretch out like mirrors. And sometimes what we see is not just joy — it is longing, grief, desire, unfinished versions of ourselves asking to be acknowledged.

As a shaman, I see ache as a signal from your spirit that it’s calling you to expand, to discover a new version of yourself — not trying to fill some external need for fun or validation. What that lonely ache is actually saying is: It’s time for the sunlight to dissolve the old version of yourself.

Not more interaction with others.

Not more distraction.

But intentionally spending time alone.

This is an act of sovereignty.

You’re saying to the universe, “I do not require noise to feel alive. I do not need constant reflection from others to know who I am. I can let the sun touch my skin, and I can let all of that radiance in slowly without anyone’s applause.”

There is a quiet strength in that.

When you take a walk without your phone, or sit outside with an iced herbal tea — just breathing and appreciating all the little things you notice — you’ll slow down time. The way light lands and dances on the ground and your skin. The hum of distant voices and music from down the street. The warmth on your shoulders. Your nervous system will settle as you breathe and let it wash over you.

For so many people, summer is about non-stop motion. But motion without equal pause will leave you feeling drained and ultimately unfulfilled after all the fun.

Summer does not ask you to exhaust yourself.

It asks you to receive.

You want to embrace the passion and fires within that are steadily glowing and receiving higher vibrations. Those feelings are frequencies your body knows instinctively. You are instinctively wired to thrive with the magic and power of each season.

Summer light creates strong contrasts of shadow everywhere and exposes everything we see more clearly. It exposes what we love and what we avoid. It reveals where we are aligned and where we are just going through the motions and half pretending.

Our summer vacation programming instilled in us the idea that we better get all our fun and play in now before fall comes and it’s time to be serious again and suffer.

You can break free of that limited, outdated program.

You are instinctively wired to thrive with the magic and power of each season.
